The mentor\/mentee relationship helps you develop as a future CPA. It creates suitable conditions for critical thinking and improves problem-solving and decision-making. Your mentor will help you develop not only professionally, but also as a human being. Your line supervisor, in contrast, will monitor your daily work. These are the 5 main steps in the mentoring relationship to keep in mind for a successful practical experience period!<\/p>\n\n\n<section class=\"block-accordions-group accordion-container aligndefault wp-block-vortex-blocks-accordions-group\">\n  \n\n<div id=\"step-1-find-your-mentor\" class=\"accordion ac\" data-open-by-default=\"false\">\n  <div class=\"accordion__accordion\">\n    <button class=\"accordion__header-row accordion-toggle ac-header ac-trigger\">\n                <span class=\"accordion__header__custom-icon icon-book\"><\/span>\n\n      \n      <p class=\"accordion__header__title\">          Step 1: Find your mentor      <\/p>\n      <span class=\"accordion__header__icon\" role=\"presentation\">\n          <span class=\"plus\"><\/span>\n      <\/span>\n    <\/button>\n    <div class=\"accordion__sub-rows wysiwyg ac-panel\">\n      \n\n<p>You are responsible for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cpaquebec.wp.vortexdev.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/find_CPA_mentor.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"16945\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">finding your CPA mentor<\/a>\u00a0once you have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cpaquebec.ca\/fr\/etudiants-et-futurs-cpa\/comment-devenir-cpa\/inscription-a-lordre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">registered with the Order<\/a>, begun your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cpaquebec.ca\/fr\/etudiants-et-futurs-cpa\/formation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Professional Education Program (PEP)<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>started your period of practical experience<\/strong>.<br><br>\u2022 You must choose your mentor and assign them to this role when you declare\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cpaquebec.ca\/fr\/etudiants-et-futurs-cpa\/stage\/processus-de-declaration-de-stage\/declarer-le-debut-dun-stage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the start of your practical experience<\/a>\u00a0in your online file.<br><br>However, if you completed part of your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cpaquebec.ca\/fr\/etudiants-et-futurs-cpa\/stage\/processus-de-declaration-de-stage\/declarer-le-debut-dun-stage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">practical experience period before you registered<\/a>, you did not need to be supervised by a mentor during this period of practical experience.<br><br>You mentor must confirm your match in their own\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cpaquebec.ca\/fr\/votre-dossier\/votre-stage\/sommaire-du-stage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online file<\/a>, so that they can view and approve your practical experience reports.<br><br>For a practical experience period in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cpaquebec.ca\/fr\/etudiants-et-futurs-cpa\/comment-devenir-cpa\/titre-de-cpa-auditeur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public accountancy<\/a>, the mentor must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>have the CPA auditor designation AND<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>perform audits at the accounting firm where the practical experience period is being completed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"notification-message aligndefault notification-message--info notification-message--outline\"\n>\n   \n\n<p class=\"is-style-intro\"><strong>To remember<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your mentor must be a CPA who is employed at the organization where you complete your period of practical experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the organization employs CPAs, you must first check whether one of the CPAs in your organization can become your mentor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the organization does not employ any CPAs, you must find a mentor outside the organization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you change jobs and\/or mentors, it is important to keep your mentor\u2019s and your line superior\u2019s names and information up to date. To support your self-assessed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpacanada.ca\/fr\/devenir-cpa\/titre-de-cpa-apercu-des-exigences-en-matiere-dexperience-pratique\/experience-pratique-des-cpa-les-competences-a-acquerir\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">competency levels<\/a>&nbsp;in your practical experience reports, document detailed examples of tasks you have performed. Plan some time at the end of each month or engagement to consider your progress. Meet with your CPA mentor twice per 12-month period of work to discuss the progress you document in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpaquebec.ca\/fr\/etudiants-et-futurs-cpa\/stage\/processus-de-declaration-de-stage\/rediger-un-rapport-de-stage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">your practical experience report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"notification-message aligndefault notification-message--info notification-message--outline\"\n>\n   \n\n<p class=\"is-style-intro\">To remember<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your CPA mentor should encourage critical thinking and ask you questions about your accumulated experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your mentor might ask you to make corrections to your practical experience report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your mentor will also be able to leave notes in your report to document the talking points of your meetings.*<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*Mentors outside Quebec will not have access to your report. By the end of your 24-month period of practical experience, you are expected to have developed sufficient&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpaquebec.ca\/en\/future-cpas\/practical-experience\/cpa-competency-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technical and enabling competencies<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must meet with your mentor for a final assessment of your progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have a maximum period of&nbsp;<strong>30 days after your practical experience period ends<\/strong>&nbsp;to submit a declaration of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpaquebec.ca\/fr\/etudiants-et-futurs-cpa\/stage\/processus-de-declaration-de-stage\/declarer-la-fin-dun-stage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">completion of your practical experience period<\/a>&nbsp;and a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpaquebec.ca\/fr\/etudiants-et-futurs-cpa\/stage\/processus-de-declaration-de-stage\/rediger-un-rapport-de-stage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report on the completion of your practical experience period<\/a>&nbsp;to the Order through your online file. The report must cover the completed portion of the experience and be approved by your mentor.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"notification-message aligndefault notification-message--info notification-message--outline\"\n>\n   \n\n<p class=\"is-style-intro\">To remember<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">The practical experience report should demonstrate your proficiency in the technical&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpaquebec.ca\/fr\/etudiants-et-futurs-cpa\/stage\/renseignements-generaux\/competences-cpa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">competencies<\/a>&nbsp;and enabling competencies (note however that it does not have to cover all of the technical competencies). As with mid-term reports, your mentor may ask you to make corrections before approving them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">Once the report is approved by your mentor, it will be assessed by the Order.
